What is Web Accessibility?
Web accessibility lies in the experience of the user. Accessible
design allows for users to understand, interact, and retrieve information
in the way that is most personally usable.
How Does Accessibility Affect Developers?
What elements a developer uses (graphics, text, video, audio or
animation) and how they use the elements (through layout, design,
conventions, organization or navigation) will impact the way a user
understands and interacts with the information presented. For example:
- Visual information such as a graphic can pose challenges to
people who use talking web browsers to read the information presented.
An inaccessible image may convey the wrong information, such as
"image map link href equals gateway slash one hundred two dash
seven million two hundred eighty six thousand four hundred twenty
five dash six million seven hundred..." or needless information,
such as "image Assistive Technology Partnership logo graphic."
- Audio information is not usable to people who are deaf and require
the information in a text version in order to use the site as
designed.
- Complex and/or inconsistent layout design may cause people with
cognitive disabilities to experience difficulties processing information.
- Some sites contain an overwhelming amount of navigation links,
and someone with limited movement can benefit greatly from a means
to skip various navigation menus.
